Number of diabetes is on the rise.  Statistics show that in the year 2000, more than 171 million individuals had diabetes worldwide.  This number is expected to double in 25 γears.

Individuals with diabetes have higher risk of illness and death, including double the risk of cardiovascular disease.  A recent study further indicates that diabetes may shorten life span.  Men and women with diabetes at age 50 and older appear to have shorter life spans and are at greater risk of heart disease than individuals without diabetes.

Common Symptoms Of Diabetes

diabetes symptomsDiabetes is a result when there is too much glucose in the blood and not enough in the cells of your body. High glucose levels in Type I diabetes are due to a lack of insulin because the insulin producing cells have been destroyed. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body’s cells become resistant to insulin that is being produced. Either way, your cells aren’t getting the glucose that they need.

Some of the common symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained sharp weight loss
  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive urination
  • Excessive eating
  • Poor wound healing
  • Infections
  • Altered mental status
  • Blurry vision

Obesity Being A Major Cause Of Diabetes

Obesity, an increasing worldwide epidemic, is the entry point to many diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis and other illnesses.

About 85% of diabetes are classified as Type 2, and within which, an average of 70% are overweight.  Studies on the connection between obesity and diabetes from the last decades suggest a strong positive correlation between the prevalence of diabetes and being overweight. The findings proposed that the largest environmental influence on the prevalence of diabetes in a population group was
the degree of obesity present in that community.

Recent researchers at the University of British Columbia, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, discovered a new link between increased level of fat in the human body and Type 2 diabetes. The discovery explains that high levels of fat in the blood destroy insulin-producing beta-cells in the pancreas by reducing the protein Carboxypeptidase E (CPE) a process that leads to Type 2 diabetes.

How To Prevent Diabetes

Most diabetes results from factors other than genetic reasons.  Therefore we can take preventive measures to stop this deadly disease which is growing at epidemic proportions.

Caloric restriction and consequent weight loss in obese diabetic patients improves their metabolic control because it results in improved insulin action in both liver and muscle.  Moreover, a healthy weight always results in beta-cell response to insulin secretory stimuli. Apart from diabetes, weight control in general reduces risk factors for heart diseases such as hypertension and dyslipidemia.

So here are what you can do to prevent diabetes:

-          If you are overweight, shed the extra kilos and maintain a healthy weight through moderately restricted-calorie diet

-          Get off the chair and exercise. Develop a habitual exercise program at least 30 minutes per session, three times a week

-          Make the necessary dietary changes to promote weight loss. These include reducing your intake of processed foods, high carbohydrate or caloric foods

-          Replace the “unhealthy food” with more fiber, fruits and vegetables
